Stuck in the Maze // from housed to homeless at Auckland Central Library {October 2017]

How do people end up sleeping rough? Our interactive maze takes people on a journey from being housed to homeless. Along the way it sheds light on what it is to be homeless in Auckland. A world of no-choice choices where things just happen.

"I don’t think people realize just how close to being unhoused we all are,” says artist Margaret Lewis. “Sometimes it’s just one or two mortgage or rent payments away, especially for people on minimum wages. Taking a trip through this maze will help people understand just how disempowering the experience of homelessness is.”

Working with people who have experience of sleeping rough, we invite you to enter our temporary maze and make your own choices. See where you end up. See how you might get out.

This work couldn't happen with the resources and support of Creative Communities AKL, Waitemata Local Board, Auckland Design Office, Auckland Libraries.

Technical Information:

Installed at City Central Library from 7 October to 5 November.

A work conceived by Margaret Lewis in collaboration with Awhina Mai Tatou Katoa and Radio NFA.
